Dogfighter Opinion 2 – F-106 Delta Dart vs Mirage III?
OK, round 2 in the dogfighter match-up.
If you were in a 1 v 1 dogfight between a Convair F-106 Delta Dart and a Dassault Mirage III which seat would you rather be in?
Both are tailless deltas with similar service ceilings and similar top speeds. The Dart has the better rate of climb and the lower wing loading. The Mirage has a greater operational range.
Its an interesting match up. In a dogfight which do you choose and why? Opinions please…
Bumpbo, this is just for curiousity. I love the different ideas the aircraft designers they come up with from the 50’s – 70’s where the Americans, British and French could come up with different designs for the same purpose, or the same design for different purposes. I enjoy hearing all your opinions on these classic planes. It started with a friendly debate with a friend at Christmas time. No hidden agenda!
Interceptor vs Fighter?
Naturally I’d go for the III rather than the “Six”. In a dog fight, energy, agility and firepower decides the winner (assuming equal pilot skills). The Mirage IIIC scores in agility and weaponry (the 2 X 30mm DEFA and the Sidewinders) along with the Snecma reliability.
Though the Delta Dart’s Genie still sends shivers…
