Three Rivers Airport History

The first recorded site of the Three Rivers Airport was located on the east side of the present Cadet/Johnson Corporation on Wood Street

In 1941, the airport moved to its second location.  Dr. Blanche Haines and her husband Dr. Thomas J. Haines were prominent physicians in Three Rivers for many years. On September 15, 1941, Dr Blanche Haines gave the city of Three Rivers a gift of 80 acres for airport purposes. This plot of Land was located on the property now known as Armstrong Field and Three Rivers Middle School

The only condition of the gift was that the name “Haines” would be retained as part of the airport name. This site was used for about three years. Due to the growing of the city and the field’s rolling terrain, it was found advisable to look for a different site that was more suitable for an airfield.   That land   was then purchased from the city by Mr. Adam Armstrong, founder of Armstrong Machine Works, and was donated to the City School System to be used, for an athletic field.

Records
show that the third, and present site, of the airport was donated by Dr. Blanche Haines to the city once again for airport purposes on August 14, 1944. This farmland consisted of 160 acres and according to the records “couldn’t raise a good crop of sand burrs.”

In 1958, the city purchased an additional 38 acres of land, known as the Brundige property. Later in 1958, the city entered into a 10-year lease agreement with an option to buy from Lawrence and Dennis Armstrong. The 80 acres was located northwest of the original 160 acres. In 1968, the city took the option and purchased the property. The city also purchased 1 2.44 acres rounding out the fi nal parcel to its present size of 290 acres.
